"The Flight" - Original Oil Painting

$2,500.00

“The Flight” is the second in a series of experimental works I painted during my late-1990s to early-2000s period, and one of the last three paintings I completed before a long hiatus lasting until 2018. The work is signed and dated 2003, though I painted it a few years earlier and signed it after completion. It builds on the first painting in the series, now lost, and it remains the only surviving work that comes close to the direction I was pursuing.

In this piece, I was exploring an Impressionist approach, working with thicker, more rapid brushstrokes and deliberately loosening my hand, letting built-up layers take precedence over fine detail. The result is a spontaneous, atmospheric surface that captures me working through a style in real time. Though I set the series aside, I plan to return to this territory.

“The Flight” has remained in my personal collection, hanging above my editing desk for more than two decades, and it holds deep personal significance for me. It is complete and ready to hang.

Painting Details:

(All materials used were current “models” from mid and late 90’s)

  • Pre-Stretched Canvas, 16x20” and personally prepared with a red/orange tinted Gesso “under coat”

  • Brushes; Grumbacher Bristle, Flat #3, #4, Round #1, Filbert #2

  • Paint used; Winsor & Newton Artist Colour and Grumbacher PreTested (back when it was good), 10 different base colors mixed to hue and varying thickness. Liquin and Colbalt dryer agents used to speed-up drying time

  • Final painting was sealed using 2 coats of High Gloss Damar Varnish

Custom Frame Details:

Shadow Box style frame made of Red Oak by the Artist exclusively for this painting in 2018.

  • Frame dimensions are 18x22x2”

  • Shadow width ¼” from canvas to frame and the frame edge width is 3/4” wide

  • Frame is Stained and Varnished with 2 coats of Dark Ebony Satin finish

  • 100lb. rated picture hanging cable (overkill I know…) through stainless steel eye-hooks is used to hang the entire piece (6lbs. total weight for canvas and frame)

I welcome the opportunity to discuss making a similar Original Commissioned Piece (it will NOT be a copy, but shall have the same feel as the original).
